Glass Options

Nobody takes energy efficiency more seriously than Andersen. That’s why we offer multiple high-performance glass options that make it possible to get Andersen® windows and patio doors that are ENERGY STAR® certified, no matter where you live in the country.

Choosing The Right Glass

Most people can enjoy optimal energy performance and comfort with our standard Low-E/Low-E4® glass offerings. Low-E (‘low-emissive’) glass reflects heat in the summer and helps keep heat inside in the winter, making this a good choice in climates where both heating and cooling costs are a concern.

Additional glass performance options include SmartSun™ glass that blocks 95% of the sun’s harmful UV rays and PassiveSun™ glass that brings the heat from sunlight into your home. Check with your Andersen dealer for glass options that make Andersen products ENERGY STAR® V 6.0 certified in your area.

frequently asked questions

What types of glass are available for Andersen, Marvin, and Pella replacement windows?
  • Andersen: Offers Low-E4® glass, SmartSun™, and HeatLock® coatings for better energy efficiency and UV protection.
  • Marvin: Provides multiple glass options, including Low-E2, Low-E3, and Low-E3/ERS, with a focus on insulating and blocking UV rays.
  • Pella: Features options like Low-E insulating glass, SunDefense™ Low-E, and triple-pane glass for better insulation and reduced energy costs.
What is Low-E glass, and why is it important?
Low-E (low-emissivity) glass has a special coating that reflects heat while allowing natural light to enter. It helps improve energy efficiency by reducing heat transfer, keeping homes cooler in summer and warmer in winter. All three brands offer various Low-E glass options to enhance energy performance.
How does double-pane glass differ from triple-pane glass?
  • Double-pane glass: Consists of two layers of glass with an insulating air or gas (like argon) layer between them. This reduces heat transfer and improves energy efficiency.
  • Triple-pane glass: Adds an additional layer of glass and gas insulation, offering even greater energy efficiency, soundproofing, and indoor temperature regulation.
What is SmartSun™ glass from Andersen?
Andersen’s SmartSun™ glass offers the highest energy efficiency and UV protection. It blocks 95% of UV rays that can fade furniture and flooring, while still allowing ample natural light inside.
What glass options are best for energy efficiency?
For energy efficiency, look for glass with low U-values (measuring heat transfer) and Low-E coatings. Triple-pane glass is also highly effective. Andersen’s SmartSun™, Marvin’s Low-E3, and Pella’s SunDefense™ glass are excellent choices for maximizing energy efficiency.
What glass options are available for impact resistance and safety?
All three brands offer impact-resistant glass options:Andersen: Offers Impact-Resistant Glass for hurricane-prone areas, which withstands strong winds and debris impact.Marvin: Provides Laminated Glass that offers enhanced protection against break-ins, storms, and noise reduction.Pella: Features Laminated Glass and Impact-Resistant Glass designed to handle extreme weather and provide added safety.
What glass options help with soundproofing?
Laminated glass and triple-pane glass are the best options for reducing noise. Andersen, Marvin, and Pella offer laminated and triple-pane glass, which dampens sound and creates a quieter indoor environment, ideal for homes in noisy neighborhoods or near busy streets.
What is SunDefense™ glass from Pella?
SunDefense™ Low-E glass from Pella is designed to block the most sunlight and heat, making it ideal for homes in hot climates. It significantly reduces heat gain while maintaining clarity and visibility, offering UV protection and energy savings.
